How to download YouTube videos to iPhone & iPad

We will show you how to download YouTube videos to your iPhone or iPad using the free application. Fast and easy.

Apple makes it even more difficult to download YouTube content, but we still know several ways to get that content on iOS and iPadOS. Follow our step by step guide and you will be finished in no time.

We use Docs, which makes it fast and easy to download directly to your iPhone or iPad. We also explain whether downloading YouTube videos is legal.

Documents app

On your device, open the App Store and search for “Documents by Readdle”. This is a free file management application that allows you to download YouTube videos.

Once installed, launch Documents and tap the lower right icon that looks like the Safari (compass) icon.

This will display a web browser where you can search for “savefromnet”, without the quotes.

Tap the link in the search results.

Go to YouTube

You need to get the URL – web address – of the YouTube video that you want to download. One of the easiest ways is to launch the YouTube application on your iPhone.

Find the video you want and wait for the ad to finish playing and the video starts. Tap on the video to show the controls, then tap the share icon (arrow pointing right).

Now tap Copy Link.

Return to the Docs application, and tap in the Link box just below the logo. Tap again to bring up the Paste options and tap to paste in the URL that you copied from the YouTube app.

You will see a green Download button with a drop-down menu on the right that offers various resolutions, so you can choose the quality you want. Resolution may be limited to 720p, so you might not be able to download the original quality if the video is in 1080p or 4K. But to watch on an iPhone screen, 720p is acceptable.

Tap green. Download the link next to the quality of your choice and rename the video if you want. Now tap Done and the video will download. The best way to do this is via Wi-Fi, not on cellular data because videos can quickly use your monthly data backup.

Tap the arrow facing down from the menu at the bottom of the screen and you can see the progress of the file download.

Watch video

After downloading, return to the application home screen. Make sure you are on the Documents tab (lower left icon) then tap Downloads. There you will find the video that you downloaded.

You can watch videos from here but if you want you can also save this in the iPhone or iPad application (not the original Video application, unfortunately).

To do this, tap the three blue dots below the video, then select Share. From the iPhone Sharing menu, select Save Video and accept permission to allow the application to access your phone’s Camera Roll.

Now you can go directly to the Photos application and watch the video.

Download via PC or Mac

If you don’t like the hassle of copying and pasting links and switching between applications, then there is an easier way if you have a PC (or Mac) using Softorino’s YouTube Converter 2.

Open the YouTube Converter website and download the version you want – Windows or Mac. The disadvantage is that this application is not free – it costs $ 19.95.

Connect your phone or tablet to the PC and tap the ‘Trust’ option if asked.

The alternative is YouTube ClickClick which is free with an optional premium mode that gives you more control over the quality of files that you download. It won’t transfer videos directly to your iPhone or iPad, so you have to do it through iTunes or other software.

Transfer to iPhone

To download videos using YouTube Converter 2 or YouTubeByClick, open a web browser and copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to download. The video will automatically appear in the application and you can copy more URLs and make a list of videos to download.

You then need to choose a quality for the video. Although you can choose 4K, it’s better to choose 720p or 1080p because no iPhone or iPad has a 4K screen, and the video of your choice might not even be 4K.

On YouTube Converter 2, click the Convert and Transfer button to iPhone and videos will be downloaded and transferred to your iPhone Video application. This can take a while, so do this well before you need a video.

If you download with YouTubeByClick you must use iTunes or another application that can synchronize videos to your iPhone or iPad.
